The Village of Moorestown was established in 1682. Originally known as the Township of Chester, formal incorporation of the Township of Moorestown by the State of New Jersey did not occur until 1922. The name is established from prominent property owners, Thomas and Elizabeth Moore, dating back to 1722. The town was originally an important stagecoach stop, including an inn.  A railroad stop was established in 1867.

Today, Moorestown is a beautiful community with a vibrant downtown, a desirable mix of residences, including historic Victorian homes, and is home to major industry, including Lockheed Martin. These qualities combined to establish Moorestown, New Jersey as the “Best Place to Live in America” by Money magazine in 2005.
